Helen’s Rehabilitation Journey

Helen was involved in a road traffic accident which resulted in a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple orthopaedic injuries. Her complex injuries, as well as her lack of insight into her difficulties resulted in social isolation, breakdown in her mental health, drug and alcohol abuse and suicidal ideation.

Life before the accident
Prior to the accident Helen was an active and social young lady, she was focusing on developing her career and had started to attend college. However, this had now all changed. She began to isolate herself from friends and family spending most of her time in her bedroom or asleep. She disengaged from therapy regularly cancelling her Neuropsychology and Occupational Therapy sessions, as she felt that therapy was not needed. She was discharged from local authority support services, the community mental health team and dentist due to regular non-attendance. Despite needing regular support to scaffold and structure her day Helen struggled to engage with the domiciliary carers that were provided. She regularly cancelled them as she found it difficult as the carers regularly changed and they and had little to no awareness of her brain injury and the best way to support her.

Understanding Helens Goals

In August 2022 our team had the pleasure of meeting with Helen and introduced her to one of our dedicated Rehabilitation Assistants, Chelsey, during a face-to-face meet and greet. During this meeting Helen was able to meet Chelsey and talk about her goals and aspirations. This was the key to igniting their positive working relationship.

To support Helen to achieve her goals we:

  • Put a structured support plan in place which included consistent weekly intervention by Chelsey

  • A visual daily timetable was set up to help Helen prepare and structure her day and remind her of upcoming appointments, this was reviewed and updated regularly by Chelsey

  • Chelsey was able to work jointly with the therapists during their sessions with Helen which enable carry over from the therapeutic sessions into Helen’s day to day activities. For example, Chelsey was able to embed strategies around supporting Helen manage her executive functioning problems, as well as embedding strategies to help Helen build on her confidence and self-esteem. This has led to an improvement in Helen’s self-care

  • Chesley has set up a diary for Helen to record her achievements and enable her to review her goals, this helps Helen to focus on how far she has come on her rehabilitation journey

Helens Achievements

Helen has since been receiving weekly support from one of our rehab assistants and this has made a significant difference, she is dedicated and focused on achieving her goals and is making great progress:
